1. Sushil Koirala becomes new PM of Nepal
i. Veteran Nepali Congress leader Sushil Koirala was on Monday elected Prime Minister of Nepal with the support of the CPN-UML, ending months of political instability following last year's elections.
ii. Koirala, the sole contestant in the premier race, was elected with 405 votes in the 601-member Constituent Assembly.
iii. As many as 148 lawmakers from UCPN-Maoist, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and some small parties in the Maoist-led alliance voted against 75-year-old Koirala.

2. India’s Economy to grow by 4.9 percent in 2013-14: CSO
i. Central Statistics Office (CSO) in its release on 8 February 2014 estimated that India's economic growth in the current (2013-14) fiscal will be 4.9 percent as compared to the growth rate of 4.5 percent in 2012-13.
ii. In its release, CSO said that the growth rate in the manufacturing and mining sectors will continue to remain a cause of concern.
iii. CSO in its estimation said that the Per Capita Income at current prices will be 74920 as compared to 67839 during 2012-13.
iv. This rise in Per Capita Income has rose by 10.4 percent. CSO has also decided the Net National Income at factor cost at current prices will be 92.4 lakh crore rupees during 2013-14 as compared to 82.6 lakh crore rupees during 2012-13.
v. This will be a rise of 11.9 percent. It also highlighted the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the year 2013-14 will be 105.4 lakh crore rupees showing a growth rate of 12.3 percent over the First Revised Estimate of GDP for the year 2012-13 of 93.9 lakh crore rupees.

3. Meiyappan involved in betting: Mudgal report
i. In a major embarrassment to BCCI president N. Srinivasan and raising questions over the status of Chennai Super Kings, his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan’s role in CSK as the team official and his involvement in betting during the IPL matches stands proved, a Supreme Court-appointed Committee has found.
ii. “The role of Gurunath Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the team official stands proved and the allegations of betting and passing of information against Meiyappan stand proved,” a report of the three-member committee headed by former Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal said.
iii. The Committee said it based its conclusiond only on the objective facts gathered during the course of its probe and contents of the chargesheet and other documents produced by the investigating agency.
iv. “However, the allegations of fixing require further investigation,” said the committee, also comprising Additional Solicitor General N Nagehswar Rao and Assam Cricket Association member Nilay Dutta.

4. Pakistan Cricket Board chief removed
i. In another stunning twist in Pakistan’s cricket administration, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has sacked Zaka Ashraf as the Chairman of the PCB and suspended the Governing board with immediate effect.
ii. In a notification issued by the ministry of inter provincial coordination, the Prime Minister, in his capacity as patron in chief of the board, has appointed an 11-member ad-hoc committee to run the cricket affairs.
iii. The ad-hoc committee includes former Test players Zaheer Abbas and Iqbal Qasim and former Chairmen of the board, Shaharyar Khan and Najam Sethi.
iv. Shakil Sheikh a member of the ad-hoc committee said Zaka Ashraf had been dismissed on different charges mainly financial mismanagement and mishandling Pakistan’s stance in the Big three issue at the ICC level.

5. Akshaya Patra gets award for excellence in financial reporting
i. The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been awarded the Gold Shield and Hall of Fame by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the year 2012-13.
ii. The foundation has been awarded under the Category XI Not-for-Profit Sector.
iii. Manish Tiwari, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, and Justice G.S. Sistani, Judge, Delhi High Court, presented the award at a function held in New Delhi.
iv. This is the fifth consecutive year Akshaya Patra has won the Gold Shield and is in the Hall of Fame now. Hall of Fame is awarded to an entity who has been a winner of Gold Shield for five consecutive years under the same category.

Note: Since inception (1958) of this award, only two organisations have won the Hall of Fame and in the Not-for-Profit sector, Akshaya Patra is the first NGO to receive the Hall of Fame.

6. India may lose 2nd spot in ICC Test rankings
i. Faltering miserably in their ongoing tour of New Zealand, India are in danger of losing their second spot in the ICC Test rankings if Australia win away their series against South Africa starting on Thursday.
ii. Second-placed India are trailing the two-match series against New Zealand 0-1 after losing the opening by 40 runs yesterday.
iii. South Africa are the clear leaders on the table with 133 ratings points, while Australia currently sit third with 111 ratings points.
iv. South Africa will retain the number-one position on the table irrespective of the outcome of the series. However, there will be a keen tussle between India and Australia for second position.
v. Australia will move into the second position if they win the series, irrespective of the result in the second Test between India and New Zealand in Wellington, starting from February 14.
vi. However, if Australia was to lose the series, then there will be no change of positions on the table, the ICC said in a statement.

7. 15 yr old Russian becomes youngest Olympic figure skating gold medalist
i. Fifteen-year-old Russian figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya has become the youngest athlete in the world to win a Gold medal at the Winter Olympics. Making her debut at the Sochi Winter Olympics, Lipnitskaya recorded the best result ever in women's free skating yesterday, scoring 141.51 points and earning a combined total of 214.41.
ii. Out of contention for a medal, India's Shiva Keshavan remained at 37th spot after third and penultimate round of men's singles luge competitions.

8. Bindra became 1st person to win three gold medals in Tri-series shooting
i. Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooter won his third gold-medal in the Inter-Shoot Tri-series Shooting in the Air Pistol event. With this, he became the first person to win three gold medals in the event that is being held at the Hague, Netherlands.
ii. To win the third gold medal, he shot 209.3 in the finals and finished ahead of the second-placed shooter by 2.4 points.
