1. Malaysia Airlines plane crashes off Vietnam

A Beijing-bound Malaysian Airlines plane that went missing with 239 people on board, including five Indians, on Saturday crashed into the sea off Vietnam’s southern Phu Quoc Island, Vietnamese media reported.

2. New India Assurance announced Asha Kiran a health insurance cover for girl child

The girl child policy also provides a personal accident cover for parents. On occurrence of any accident to parent, the sum insured would be placed as a fixed deposit in the names of the girl child.

The ASHA KIRAN policy has daily cash benefit on hospitalization, critical care benefit up to 10 per cent sum insured and emergency ambulance charges.

New India also announced health policies with added benefits for the women customer of bank. General Insurance had its tie up with Bhartiya Mahila Bank.

3. President gives Stree Shakti Puraskar to six persons on International Women's Day

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, President Pranab Mukherjee today presented the Stree Shakti Puraskar to six persons for their distinguished services for the upliftment of women.

The awards are named after six legendary women of India, Rani Lakshmibai, Rani Rudramma Devi, Kannagi, Rani Gaidinliu Zaliang, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar and Mata Jijabai.

The Stree Shakti Puraskar carries a cash award of three lakh rupees and a citation.

Secretary, Women and Child Development, A K Jain said, the government has adopted several policies and legal measures for the empowerment of women and their welfare.

4. Bharatiya Mahila Bank to open branch in Kerala

Bharatiya Mahila Bank Ltd (BMB), the first all-women nationalised bank, is opening its branch in Kerala's capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

5. Bihar emerges as fastest growing state in 2012-13

The latest data released by the Central Statistics Office shows that Bihar is the fastest growing State with its Gross State Domestic Product growing at 15.05 per cent during 2012-13. It is the only State to clock a double-digit growth rate.

6. World snooker champion Pankaj Advani secures his 6th national snooker title.

He comprehensively beat Kamal Chawla by a 6-3 scoreline at the 81st national snooker championship 2014.

He has so far won the 7 world title in billiards and one in snooker.

He is the only Indian with a world title in snooker.

Vidya Pillai defeats Chitra Magimairaj to retain the women's title.
